It was first introduced to the piano market with the introduction of Baldwin’s new Masterpiece Artist Series grand pianos in 1932. The models were presented after 7 years of extensive research and development, Lucien Wulsin, the president of Baldwin first enlisted the help of the physics department at the University of Cincinnati in their quest for a standardized method of measuring piano tone. The result was the invention of the first electronic tool named the Spectrograh that could precisely measure each tone of the scale and its harmonics. This represented a substantial development in American piano manufacturing where an empirical process replaced intuitive estimates with scientific consistency for determining the tonal values used in the development of scale designs.      Upon their introduction, the Artist Series Models including the Model M, The Model L and the Model F and Model D were meet with rave reviews by some of the most eminent artists of the day.
